Technology Checklist for Returning Students

  • Does your laptop measure up?  Whether you are purchasing a new laptop or coming back with the same laptop, make sure that it meets or exceeds our requirements.
  • Is your laptop in good running condition? Make sure that you check over your laptop before you return to Brewster to make sure that its screen is not cracked, it turns on, there are no missing keys, and all your ports work. Your laptop is a vital part of your Brewster education and you are expected to keep it in top running condition in order to be prepared for class!
  • Register your laptop Serial Number by August 15th.  Have your parent/guardian re-register your computer’s serial number in their Parent Portal before August 15th.  There will be an active link in the Parent Portal by mid-June.
  • Backup Hard Drive.  Everyone should backup their computer files on a regular basis to avoid losing valuable school work, precious photos, music collections and other files.  Take the time this summer to buy a new external hard drive if you don’t already have one.  If you do have one, be sure to bring it to campus.   ITD recommended hard drive
  • Protective Laptop Case.  A protective case can save you hundreds of dollars in repairs as it often prevents damage due to accidental drops.  If you don’t have one, we recommend the Speck Cases
  • Keyboard Cover.  We see about 20-25 student laptops per year that require major repairs to the tune of $775 due to liquid accidentally being spilled on keyboard.  Liquid spills are NOT covered under the AppleCare Protection Policy.  Buy a keyboard cover if you don’t have one. We recommend the Moshi keyboard cover $24.95.
  • Laptop Charger. Make sure you have a FUNCTIONING charger. Seriously, your computer won’t work without one.
  • Computer Bag.  Bring along a well padded computer bag or backpack that will help prevent dent’s and broken screens.
  • Backup your files before you get to campus  When arriving to Brewster in September, your laptop will be Brewsterized, which will ERASE EVERYTHING ON YOUR COMPUTER! Brewsterization is the process where all the software you need to start classes is installed onto your laptop. If you have a backup of all of your files, you can copy them back to your laptop after the Brewsterization process is complete.  If you don’t backup your files, all of your photos, music, movies and everything else will be lost forever.
  • Do you remember your Brewster Password?  Before coming back to school, try to log into the Brewster Portal with your 10+ character password.  If you can’t remember your password, click the button on the Portal login page to reset your password.
